Our natural human instinct is to try to help others, and to offer our own thoughts, opinions, and feelings. However, sometimes that is not what the person needs to heal. For many who are struggling, they often need to take the journey of discovery on their own. They need space and time to be alone with themselves, so that they can examine who they are and reclaim their own sense of self. In those cases, the best thing we can do is just be there. To listen. To be patient. They may not be able to say it, but your simple presence in their lives gives them comfort. Just saying “I am here for you when you are ready. I am not going to leave you” is enough.
