Under The Northern Stars
I had the blessing of growing up in small-town Canada. You only had to travel 20 minutes north of the city and you were completely isolated in nature. On a clear summer night, without the light pollution of the city, you could see stars clearer than words can describe. There was a large, open rock face just off a trail that we would often visit in my teen years, called Moonstone. At this spot the stars and moon were so bright you could easily read a book even at night. It was stunning.
This piece is inspired by the sensation of lying on that rock face, looking up at the star-filled sky. At twilight you see just one star appearing in the sky, and within minutes the sky begins to fill. By nightfall, you can see stars as far as the eye can see and you are surrounded by the majesty of space. As you gaze up, your eye eventually finds that one star in the sky that is calling to you. That special star belongs to you.
